September is national yoga month. Yoga month is a campaign to teach people about the health benefits of performing yoga and to help people create healthier lifestyles by incorporating yoga into their daily routines. I have done yoga and I personally have seen the impact that it made on my sense of well-being and my stress levels. Research has shown yoga to benefit people in the following ways:
- Lowering blood pressure
- Decreasing stress levels
- Increasing flexibility
- Weight loss
For National Yoga Month I want to introduce a yoga pose to you guys at the beginning of the week. My challenge to you is to perform the move everyday of the week and see how you feel by the end of the month. The poses will be beginner level poses so everyone should be able to do them. Stick with it and I can assure you, you’ll notice changes in your body and mind.
CORPSE POSE
The Corpse Pose is also called the Savasana pose. This pose is known to relieve stress, fatigue, asthma, constipation, indigestion, and insomnia. This pose is performed on the floor so a mat is recommended. To do this pose first lay down on your mat and rotate your legs in and out then relax them allowing them to fall to your sides naturally. Then relax your arms away from your body while palms face upwards. Move your head side to side then rest it in the center. In addition to relaxing your legs and arms, next relax your facial muscles. Relax your tongue, nose, ears, and forehead. Relax your eyes and breath deeply and slow. Clear your mind and concentrate on breathing and your body. Remain in this pose for 5 minutes.
